Cape Town - Bonteheuwel ward councillor Angus McKenzie’s sons have done it again by bagging gold at the Western Province Wrestling Championships held in Durbanville at the weekend.

Connor, 14, and Carter, 12, from the Parow Wrestling Club, smiled from ear to ear after their wins on Saturday.

Carter, who celebrated his 12th birthday on Sunday, said it was an “early birthday gift to himself”.

“It feels great knowing that you are one of the best in the province, that your hard work and dedication paid off.

“I feel stronger, taller and fitter because of the practices and I feel confident, proud and happy because of the achievement.”

He jokes: “It’s not WWE wrestling, it’s professional wrestling … one thing it has in common is that it takes a lot of support from those around you to succeed.”

Carter thanked his family and his teacher for helping him maintain his good grades. He also thanked his school, Panorama Primary, for backing him.

Carter also made the Western Province Rugby u-12 team a few weeks ago, where he plays as a prop.

He said the achievements taught him to not give up.

“And respect, respect is the main key, you need to respect everyone and show it wherever you are,” he said.
