Cape Town - A cyclist who went missing in the Knysna forest on Saturday was found by a search and rescue team near the Bitou River in Plettenberg Bay on Monday afternoon.

Alan Broderick, 58, had last been seen cycling in the Knysna forest on Saturday.

His wife, Gail, said she notified authorities after Broderick, who was expected back at about 2pm in Plettenberg Bay on Saturday afternoon, did not return.

The couple from Johannesburg are on holiday in Plettenberg Bay.

“I called for help as I worried after he did not return from his ride.

“We got in touch with SANParks on Saturday afternoon, their team and rescue teams have been assisting us with the search,” she said.

An appeal for the public to join the search was issued by the family on Sunday.

Police spokesperson, Christopher Spies, confirmed the 58-year-old was found by the team on Monday.

“The search and rescue operation with the deployment of air support led to the discovery of the 58-year-old man in the forest near the Bitou River, Plettenberg Bay, at about 4pm.

“The crew noticed activity in the vicinity and a search in the area led to the discovery.

“He was airlifted and taken to a medical facility for further medical attention and care,” said Spies.

His eldest daughter, Lara Broderick, said the family was relieved that he had been found.

“It’s been a rough past two days, but he’s been found and he’s alive. It looks like he got lost.

“He’s scratched and bruised. He was walking along the river where they found him.

“But he is fine. We have experienced the most incredible support from the local rescue teams and we want to thank them.

“The community also volunteered and everyone pulled together to find him.

“We are deeply grateful to everyone who helped.

“My father has the heart of a lion, he survived out there in the forest for more than 50 hours,” she said.
