Cape Town - Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) teams hoisted a fisherman to safety after he lost his balance and fell while trying to reel in a big fish at the Steenbras River Mouth at the weekend.

WSAR said the 41-year-old man fell from the rocks while fishing at the Steenbras River Mouth, between Gordon’s Bay and Kogel Bay, on the eastern coastline of False Bay, on Saturday afternoon.

WSAR spokesperson David Nel said: “According to the fisherman, he lost his balance when the line broke while he was trying to reel in a large fish.

“He fell backwards and tumbled approximately 3m into a broken gulley injuring himself.

“He was unable to move from where he had fallen.”

Wilderness Search And Rescue teams were immediately dispatched and the Western Cape Department of Health EMS / Air Mercy Service (AMS) rescue helicopter was also activated. A small WSAR team was hoisted down to the fisherman.

After an assessment of the man’s injuries, he was put on a stretcher and hoisted up to the helicopter.

He was flown to a nearby landing zone, before being transported to hospital by ambulance.

“We wish our him a speedy recovery, and we ask that all wilderness enthusiasts help us by sharing the emergency contact number 021 937 0300 - and share our posts and the #IAmWildernessSafe campaign,” Nel said.
