Two firefighters have been lauded for helping a mom-to-be who arrived at the Mfuleni Fire Station in distress, deliver her healthy baby boy.
Joswin Lameyer and Khuselo Blaai were at the station when the woman arrived complaining of obstetric pains at the weekend.
Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, said they jumped into action and summoned paramedics from Macassar Fire Station.
“But the baby was not waiting, and so the two firefighters set about helping the mom deliver her baby, while receiving telephonic instructions from an Ambulance Emergency Assistant.
“A few minutes later, a healthy baby boy made his appearance, and Lameyer and Blaai were able to clamp and cut the umbilical cord,” Smith said.
The mom and baby were transported to the Site C Community Health Centre in Khayelitsha.
“This is such a wonderful start to the festive season.
“My best wishes to the mom and the newest addition to her family, and I also want to congratulate our firefighters for their quick thinking and putting their skills to good use to help welcome the newborn to the world,” Smith said.
Meanwhile, Metro Police nabbed a shooting suspect when they came across a scene while driving along Malibongwe Drive where a motorist had apparently crashed his vehicle, and when approached by a security guard, tried to get away.
When the security guard gave chase, the suspect shot him.
“He was found between the reeds by Metro Police officers, and surrendered.
“The Eye in the Sky too was dispatched to the scene,” the City said.
Metro Police Officers handed over the suspect to SAPS, as well as a Glock 9mm pistol registered in his name.
“This incident escalated quickly, with devastating consequences. The recent crime statistics showed that firearms were used in 55% of all murders in the Western Cape between July and September. We speak very often about the scourge of illegal firearms and the damage that they inflict in the wrong hands.
In fact, just over an hour after this incident, our Law Enforcement officers recovered an illegal firearm in the CBD.
“That said, even persons who carry firearms legally have a duty to handle their weapons responsibly,” said Smith.
