Cape Town – Speaking out and standing together against injustices against women and children on Tuesday, the New Horizon Neighbourhood Watch in Grassy Park joined hands in a human chain along Strandfontein Road.

Treasurer for the neighbourhood watch, Saadiqah Ganief said they were joined by ward councillor Gerry Gordon, residents and children of New Horizons, Pelican Park.

The demonstration was held between 15th Avenue and 18th Avenue to raise awareness and stress the importance of Women’s Day.

“Our aim was to shed light on the history and remembrance of Women’s Day.

“To inform and educate our communities on our past struggles during the apartheid era.

“How the women of all races stood up and marched to the Union Buildings.

“The main highlight of the demonstration human chain was to depict the various types of abuse.

“We stood with our placards with a blue eye, some community residents wore ripped clothing, others had their arms in a sling to represent an injury.

“We wanted the motorists and bystanders to see the impact and severity of the struggle of abuse that women face daily.

“Awareness should not be subjected to only awareness and celebratory days.

“It should be a conscious movement to continuously raise awareness and say enough is enough,” said Ganief.

She added that they have committed to continue their uprising against abuse of women and children.
