Cape Town - The search continues for a George fisherman who was swept off the rocks five days ago near Herolds Bay in the Southern Cape.

NSRI Wilderness station commander, Mike Vonk, said a wave swept the man off rocks from the shoreline while he and a fellow fisherman were collecting bait, east of Gwaing River Mouth, near to Herolds Bay on Saturday.

“At 9:56am, Saturday, November 12, NSRI Wilderness, George Fire and Rescue Services, WC Government Health EMS rescue squad and ambulance, the SA Police Services and the EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter were activated.

“NSRI rescue swimmers were dispatched directly to the scene and together with the emergency services conducted a shoreline search,” said Vonk.

“The Skymed rescue helicopter conducted an air search.

“Sea conditions deteriorated during the search efforts on Saturday.

“Despite an extensive air, sea and shoreline search there remained no sign of the missing man,” Vonk said.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the missing man in this difficult time.”

Southern Cape police spokesperson, Captain Malcolm Poje said the search continued.

“The search for the missing fisherman who was reported as missing on Saturday, November 12, is ongoing.

“After reports of his disappearance, members activated EMS and other rescue services to search for the missing man, but without any success.”
