Cape Town - A Team from the South African Weather Service (Saws) is expected to conduct a site visit in Velddrif on Monday where what was described as a water spout, occurred at the weekend
In video footage shared across social media platforms at the weekend, the water spout – a column of rotating, cloud-filled wind – appears in a part of Velddrif’s water body along the West Coast.
Lebohang Melato at SAWS confirmed an official statement regarding the weather occurrence will be made after a site visit and assessment to be conducted Monday.
The weather phenomenon occurred over the weekend where a weather warning was issued by SAWS for the Western Cape coastline, in which three cold fronts were expected to make landfall in the province.
Meanwhile, snow made landfall in the Matroosberg Reserve on Saturday night, but with rain on Sunday the reserve said this melted the little low-lying snow in the area.
Matroosberg Reserve posted: “As much as we want you to pay us a visit, we really can’t face a lot of disappointed people, as we are disappointed ourselves, but then on the other hand, we hope the rain will push our dam levels to the 50% mark of what we need for the coming season.”
On Sunday, a social media post by Ceres Snow Facebook page read: “A thin layer of snow fell in the night but also got washed away by the persistent rain. No ground snow as yet. Currently it’s only on the mountaintops. Experienced hikers can definitely reach those heights but not worth burning a tank of fuel at the moment.”
