Durban — A Durban dance crew flew the South African flag high, following a successful venture in an international world championships.
Durban’s Wu Tang Cru achieved gold and silver in the UDO World Street Dance Championships. The crew achieved gold in the under-14 Intermediate category and crowned Intermediate World Champions. The crew also achieved silver, following a runner-up finish in the under-14 Duo category.
Co-founder of Wu Tang Cru, Sanusha Govender said they were elated at their recent success in the competition and hoped to build on it.
She added that this was the biggest street dance competition in the world with over 8000 participants from over 40 countries competing across various age groups.
Govender said this was big for the country, and they had received a lot of support and admiration from the spectators, as well as fellow international participants.
She praised one of her dancers - Makhosazane Zuma - who won gold on her 13th birthday.
Govender said that even those who didn’t get medals did well and contributed to the growth of street dance and performance in South Africa.
She added that street dance also helped to empower the youth: “This achievement means that children can compete at an international level and enter various competitions of a very high stand. For these children to represent their country and earn their Protea colours in American Street Dance is absolutely massive for the country.”
She concluded that the crew would continue providing lessons to their members, and encourage new ones to join as they prepare for more international competitions.
