Durban - Former Ezinqoleni municipal manager Mandlenkosi Mabece, 53, was released on R10 000 bail by the Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court after appearing for a fraud case in excess of R40 million.

Hawks provincial spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said Mabece appeared on Thursday.

“He briefly appeared in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court and was released on R10 000 bail. The case was postponed to May 31, 2022, for discovery,” Mhlongo said.

Mabece was the municipal manager at Ezinqoleni before the merger of the municipality and the Hibiscus Coast Municipality.

“It is alleged that between November 2014 and September 2016 Mabece contravened Municipal Finance Management Act and Municipal Supply Chain Management Regulations. He allegedly failed to ensure that lawful procurement processes were complied with during the appointment of engineering service providers, thereby causing undue benefits,” Mhlongo said.

“More than R40 million was paid to those entities,” he said.

Mhlongo said a case of fraud was reported at Ezinqoleni police station and the case docket was allocated to Hawks members for a thorough investigation and he was then arrested.
