Durban — The Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs in KZN was liaising with all disaster management teams in the districts to assess whether there was any damage to infrastructure.

This is after parts of Durban and Lesotho experienced another earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 5.1 on Sunday morning.

This earthquake comes hours after the first one which was experienced on Saturday between 2pm and 3pm in parts of Durban, Lesotho and eSwatini which was estimated to have a magnitude of 5.0.

On Saturday afternoon, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 was recorded, near Dundee in KwaZulu-Natal.

MEC Sihle Zikalala said that so far no injuries or fatalities have been reported adding that the disaster management machinery is monitoring the situation and will be available for deployment where necessary.

“The department has noted reports by the public and a number of agencies on the minor earthquake that took place yesterday and this morning in parts of the province. We wish to call for calm amongst all communities. The department has established contact with the Council for Geoscience which is a legislated body to determine the extent of tremors and potential impacts in the affected areas,” he said on Sunday.

IOL earlier reported that the US Geological Survey, said a moderate magnitude 4.6 earthquake was felt in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, at 2.32pm.
