Durban — KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube has called for an investigation into the drowning incident at the Durban beachfront, which left three people dead and 17 injured.
In a statement from the KZN provincial government, spokesperson Lennox Mabaso said that Dube-Ncube sends condolences following the tragic drowning incident that claimed three lives at a Durban beach.
Mabaso said that Dube-Ncube reacted with shock and sadness following the news of the tragic drowning incident in which three people died and 17 were left injured.
“We are devastated by this sad loss of life. We have asked for an urgent report from our disaster teams and eThekwini Municipality,” Mabaso said.
He said that the details of the incidents are still sketchy at this point, however, it is believed that a freak wave put many people into distress while swimming and they tragically drowned. In addition, 17 others are reported to be injured.
“The premier has called for a full investigation into this terrible tragedy. This will include fact-finding on all safety measures in this painful accident,” Mabaso said.
He said that Dube-Ncube directed that support be prioritised for all affected families.
He also said that the team from eThekwini, the Office of the Premier and the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs will continue to interact with the families to support them in this difficult time.
“This traumatic incident happens as thousands of visitors are flocking to enjoy themselves in various water recreational facilities at beaches and the sea,” Mabaso said.
He said that the premier has called on all authorities and operators manning the beaches and sea areas to ensure adequate and preventative safety measures are in place to avoid any further loss of life.
He also said that Dube-Ncube appealed to all visitors and beachgoers to follow all safety advice and be safe around the sea and at swimming pools. All visitors must swim in areas demarcated and protected by lifeguards and at appropriate times deemed for safe bathing.
“The unpredictable weather must also be assessed before anyone takes to the beach or the sea,” Mabaso said.
He added that more communication will be released once full details are available.
