Durban — A suspect is expected to make another court appearance in the North West after his arrest for being in possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.
The vehicle, with KwaZulu-Natal registration plates, was allegedly hijacked in the Eastern Cape earlier this month.
North West police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said Dumisani Mnyandu, 56, is expected to reappear in the Molopo Magistrate’s Court in Mmabatho on Thursday for a bail application.
Mokgwabone explained that Mnyandu was arrested on Thursday, July 25, while trying to cross the Ramatlabana Port of Entry into Botswana with a Hyundai Grand Creta.
“He was arrested after the circulation system showed that the vehicle with KwaZulu-Natal registration numbers, was allegedly hijacked at Mbizana in the Eastern Cape, on Sunday, July 14.”
Mokgwabone added that preliminary investigations revealed that Mnyandu was travelling to Malawi.
“Consequent to his arrest, Mnyandu made an initial court appearance on Friday, July 26, for possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.”
Reacting to the arrest, North West police provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Sello Kwena commended police at the Port of Entry for their attentiveness and collaboration with the Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit (VCIU) in the fight against transnational crimes.
In an unrelated incident, a visit by SANDF General Officer Commanding the South African Armour Formation Brigadier General KC Pakade encouraged 1 Special Service Battalion members.
Lieutenant Colonel Bonakele David Madolo intensively focused also on deployment operations.
Captain Moses Semono of the Joint Operations Tactical Headquarters Limpopo said: “SA National Defence Force soldiers who were busy with foot patrol around Poppalin Ranch, confiscated a luxurious Toyota Land Cruiser valued at R1 448 900. Unfortunately, the suspects managed to flee. Upon circulation by the South African Police Service, the vehicle was reported as stolen, at Parkview Police Station.”
