Durban — Luck ran out on Saturday for a suspect wanted in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng for crimes including murder and attempted murder.

Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said that in an intelligence-driven operation, the Serious Organised Crime Investigation’s Tactical Operations Management Section (Toms) assisted the KZN Provincial tracing team, SAPS National Modus Operandi Centre and Johannesburg District Aggravated Robberies team to arrest and detain a 30-year-old suspect wanted in KZN and Gauteng.

Mogale said the Pretoria-based Hawks’ Toms team, collaborating with the Pietermaritzburg Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, operationalised information that was received.

The team was granted a warrant of arrest to detain one suspect in the Jeppe area next to George Koch hostel in connection with a murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and attempted murder of two police officials and the murder of his neighbour in KZN.

Mogale said the suspect was sought by law enforcement in Gauteng and KZN, where several attempts to secure his appearance in court were in vain.

The suspect was also due to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on July 28, for possession of an unlicensed firearm, but failed to do so because at the time he was also being sought for murder in KZN.

“The suspect will be appearing in court soon on the Jeppe case facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm. He will then be transferred to KwaZulu-Natal where he will answer to murder and attempted murder as per the Estcourt case as well as murder as per the Loskop case. All the crimes were committed this year,” Mogale said.
