Durban — Mangosuthu University of Technology will celebrate its 45th anniversary through music and dance.

The event, dubbed “Beyond Music and Dance Festival – Celebrating 45 Years”, will take place next month at the institution’s Seme Hall.

In a statement issued by the university on Tuesday, it said the event would not only honour the university’s founder and his legacy, the late Inkosi Mangosuthu Buthelezi, but also pay homage to the rich cultural tapestry of uMlazi, the institution’s cherished community and home. The varsity is hosting the event in partnership with renowned Afrojazz and cultural music sensation Mbuso Khoza.

“Hosting this event is crucial for our institutional advancement as it showcases our commitment to community engagement, cultural preservation, and educational excellence. By celebrating our 45-year journey alongside uMlazi, we reinforce our role as an anchor institution deeply rooted in local heritage and global impact. Moreover, this concert serves as a vital fund-raiser to support ongoing educational and community development initiatives, fostering a brighter future for our students and the broader community,” read the statement.

The university hailed Khoza as a powerful voice and cultural resonance who epitomises the essence of this celebration. It added that the concert will feature a dynamic line-up that includes various music genres, traditional dance performances, an exhilarating drumming session, and captivating storytelling sessions.

“Attendees will also have an opportunity to experience our history through a special slide-show presentation, highlighting pivotal moments in the institution’s journey, the evolution of the township, the contributions of alumni and staff, and the vibrant spirit of our current students,” read the statement.

Dr Connie Israel, executive director of Institutional Advancement at the institution, said the event is also a fund-raising initiative to support ongoing educational endeavours. She added that the event will start in the afternoon and run for three to four hours.

The event is open to everyone at the cost of R250 each and tickets can be purchased Quicket.co.za

The institution has recently made history by appointing the first woman vice-chancellor in its 45-year history.
