Durban — The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) has confirmed to the Daily News that the name and pictures sent to it was that of a person of interest in the 2021 murder case of an Umkomaas detective.
Detective-Captain Sam Nyawose, 55, of the Umkomaas SAPS Detective Service, was gunned down in an alleged hit while on his way to work in February.
He was driving on the M14 in Roseneath when a car with four armed occupants allegedly followed him and fired at him as he approached a speed hump.
This week Renegades Search and Rescue shared on their socials pictures and information pertaining to Andile Michael Nzuza.
On the poster is says that the 31-year-old has a warrant of arrest out for him in connection with two murders, four attempted murders as well as a hijacking.
After being sent the poster and pictures, Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo confirmed that a warrant of arrest was issued for the suspect.
“He is sought by Hawks members from Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation.”
Nyawose was killed in the February incident and the assailants, in making a get-away, hijacked and shot and killed a 33-year-old motorist.
It is alleged that after Nyawose was shot the shooters were spotted driving recklessly by Umkomaas members on patrol, and after a chase ensued the suspect's vehicle is alleged to have crashed into a truck.
It was at this point that the suspects robbed and fatally shot the 33-year-old motorist before speeding off from the crime scene in the victim's vehicle.
