Durban — Two KwaZulu-Natal policemen are expected in court today (Wednesday) along with three others, accused of double murder, attempted murder, kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice after they were arrested by a multidisciplinary team made up of the Hawks and SAPS.
Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said that on Tuesday, Hawks members from the Port Shepstone Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, working together with Port Shepstone Tactical Response Team and Ugu District detectives, arrested five suspects aged between 38 and 47.
“They were arrested for (alleged) murder, kidnapping, defeating the ends of justice and attempted murder which happened at Marburg area in Port Shepstone,” Mhlongo said.
He said that two males were reported missing at Msinsini police station in February this year. A missing person docket was registered and the investigation ensued. On February 28 this year, a decomposed body was found in the Msinsini area and it was positively identified as one of the missing persons.
The investigation continued and in September, the skeletal remains – suspected to be the other missing person – were found in the same vicinity.
“DNA samples were collected and sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis. It is alleged that the victims were severely assaulted by the suspects and their bodies were dumped in the bushes.
“The five suspects are expected to appear in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court today (Wednesday) and more arrests are imminent,” Mhlongo said.
Meanwhile, last month two Umkomaas policemen, Mayendran Chetty and Vincent Phelago, charged with the murder of ANC ward 99 councillor, Mnqobi Molefe, appeared in the Margate Magistrate’s Court.
They faced two counts of murder for allegedly killing Mlungisi “Piks” Buthelezi and Nhlonipho Nzimande, who were the councillor’s associates, execution-style in separate incidents in August and September.
Molefe was shot and killed while at the home of his fiancé in Mvutshini village outside Margate on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast in September.
