Charli XCX has revealed the physical and emotional challenges she faced during her recent “Sweat” tour, including an injury that has left her in pain.
The English singer and songwriter, whose real name is Charlotte Emma Aitchison, took to stages in venues across the US and Canada alongside Australian musician, Troye Sivan, in support of their albums “Brat” and “Something to Give Each Other”, respectively.
The tour began on September 14, in Detroit, Michigan, and concluded on October 23, in Seattle, Washington.
This week, the 32-year-old, who is nominated for seven Grammy awards ahead of the ceremony in Los Angeles in February, told “Variety” the pain she now suffers from is due to her onstage antics.
“I find the stage these days to be a very angry place for me,” she said.
“I’ve done a lot of physical damage to my body from performing and I’m often in a lot of pain when I perform.”
She added that her performances during her tour were so intense that it caused her to sustain an injury.
“Genuinely, physically I have nerve damage in my neck from things that I’ve done on the stage.”
But the “360” hitmaker insisted that giving her all on stage is part of her process.
“For me to give a performance that I feel is good enough,” she said.
“I have to really physically throw myself around and that makes me very upset when I do it. So, it’s kind of this hell-hole.”
She also credited her team as well as Sivan for their support during the tour.
“Being with Troye just softens that quite a lot and a lot of other people on the tour just made me feel a lot lighter.”
Charli, who has collaborated with the “Angel Baby” singer on multiple songs, including “1999” and “talk talk”, added to the publication that their friendship helped her get through the tour.
“I find touring really hard emotionally and being with Troye just made that a lot easier and less of an emotional battle for me.”
“I think our cute off days actually were probably my most fun memory,” she said. “We became, actually, quite a nice little family on that tour.”
Her musical career began back in 2008 when she began posting songs on Myspace in 2008 before entering the London rave scene. She has since released studio albums, five mixtapes, three extended plays and one live album.
