British drag queen James Lee Williams, widely known as The Vivienne, the first-ever winner of RuPaul's Drag Race UK in 2019, has died at the age of 32.
The news of his death was confirmed by manager, Simon Jones, who described Williams as a "beloved, warmhearted, and amazing person."
"It is with immense sadness that we let you know our beloved James Lee Williams – The Vivienne – has passed this weekend," Jones wrote in an Instagram statement.
"James was an incredibly loved, warmhearted and amazing person. Their family are heartbroken at the loss of their son, brother, and uncle. They are so proud of the wonderful things James achieved in their life and career."
Williams, a trailblazer in the drag and entertainment industry, rose to fame as the inaugural winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2019.
Beyond the drag world, they showcased their versatility in television and theatre, appearing in "This is Going to Hurt", "Dancing on Ice" (finishing third in 2023), and performing as the Wicked Witch of the West in "The Wizard of Oz" musical, both on tour and in London’s West End.
Jones, who had been Williams’ manager since 2019, also shared a deeply personal tribute.
“Viv was a close friend, a client, and someone I loved very much. From the moment I met them in 2019, I knew we could create magic together. Their talent was immense, and the light they brought to every room was astonishing.
"No one has ever made me laugh in my life as much as Viv did."
The Vivienne’s untimely passing has prompted an outpouring of grief from fans, friends, and colleagues. RuPaul's Drag Race judge Michelle Visage expressed her sorrow in an emotional post:
"My darling @thevivienne_, we go back to when I started coming over here to the UK. You were always there, always laughing, always giving, always on point. Your laughter, your wit, your talent, your drag. I loved all of it, but I loved your friendship most of all," she wrote.
Visage added, "Seeing you make your West End debut was amazing for me, to witness your dream come true right in front of my eyes. I’m the lucky one to have known you and to have laughed together so many times. I love you, my darling. You will be so missed, my lovely. May your light shine fiercely, forever. RIP my angel. Fly high."
The Vivienne’s stage name was inspired by their love of wearing Vivienne Westwood designs.
Their career highlights also include starring in "Celebrity Hunted" in 2022 and making a memorable appearance on "Blankety Blank", which aired on Boxing Day 2024.
In their Instagram post, The Vivienne reflected on the past year with a hopeful message.
“Some 24’ highlights. What a year it’s been. Here’s to reaching new heights and achieving dreams in 25. Wishing all the most prosperous new year. You got this Viv xxxx."
