Renowned DJ Thato Sikwane, popularly known as DJ Fresh, recently posted two informative video clips from a previous conversation he had with celebrated rapper, Nadia Nakai on his “WAW! What a Week” podcast.

In the clips, the two local celebrities talked about the downside of being public figures.

Sharing his views, DJ Fresh said: “Sometimes it feels like we are in the zoo. We’ll feed when we want, we will take pictures when we want, we’ll pose when we want, we’ll talk shit about you when we want.

“But you’re in the zoo, you’re not allowed to have any feelings about it.”

Nakai agreed: “Yes, you’re not allowed to have feelings and the annoying thing is that you can’t engage, you can’t show them that you have feelings because then you are feeding the beast.”

In the second clip, the renowned DJ asked Nakai about her thoughts on whether social media fights between rappers were good or bad for hip hop.

She responded: “The state of hip hop is currently bubbling. There are a lot of artists coming out and I think that it’s so amazing.

“Honestly, I feel like beefing is bad, what it results in is your fans not knowing when to pause ... I feel like it can escalate to a very dangerous place which is not exciting.

She added that it does however create hype.

“The talkability around it can be exciting, but for me, it’s something that I would never engage in, I am not built for it. It’s not my energy. It’s not positive ...

“I think globally, even women are using beef to get talkability because hip hop is not just a little bit quiet in South Africa, hip hop is quiet, globally.

She said rappers are carefully orchestrating these fights for their own benefit.

“Then they drop a tour or they drop a song ... You guys think it’s just beef, this is very orchestrated ... They doing this for a reason ...”
