The 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) nominations have been announced and South Africa’s music sensation Tyla has been nominated for four awards.

This is Tyla’s first-ever MTV EMA nominations. She has nods in the following categories Best New, Best Afrobeats, Best R&B, and Best African Act.

Despite Tyla stating that she represents amapiano and not afrobeats, she has received a nomination for Best Afrobeats alongside hitmakers such as Asake, Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, Rema, and Tems.

She was snubbed in the Best Push category, which would have been fitting as her music has been pushed across various global territories.

The Joburg-born artist is not the only South African artist nominated at the MTV EMAs.

Amapiano DJ and music producer DBN Gogo, and TitoM and Yuppe the artists behind viral sensation “Tshwala Bam” have been nominated in the Best African Act category. They are nominated alongside Asake, Ayra Starr, Diamond Platnumz and Tyla.

“We are incredibly proud to see African artists continuing to shine on the global stage at the 2024 MTV EMAs,” said BET international senior vice-president and general manager of Paramount Africa, Monde Twala.

“The nominations reflect the remarkable talent and diversity of Africa’s music scene, with Afrobeats and other genres making a powerful impact worldwide. Artists like Ayra Starr, Tyla, Burna Boy, and Tems are true ambassadors of African excellence, and their achievements inspire the next generation of creatives across the continent.”

The 2024 MTV EMAs will take place at Manchester’s Co-op Live on November 10, marking the first time the event will be held in the city and celebrating its 30th anniversary. The event will be broadcast live on MTV via DStv Channel 322 and GOtv Channel 72.
