For the final year, the Metro FM Music Awards will be held in Mpumalanga on May 3, 2025, at Mbombela Stadium, and the nominees’ announcement event will take place on Thursday, February 27.

Metro FM took to Mpumalanga this week, to celebrate the start of the awards season with partners, key stakeholders, clients, and advertisers.

Musician Basetsana Maluleka, popularly known as Bassie, performed at the launch, which took place at Hoyohoyo Angels View Graskop. In 2023, Bassie won her first Metro FM Music Award for Best Music Video for her collaboration "Izenzo" with Aymos.

She told IOL that winning a Metro FM Music Award helped her career, as her booking fee has increased since winning the prestigious award.

“It made me happy. It made me feel like oh my gosh, my hard work is finally being seen because I've been singing and that was my first nomination, first win, and till today, I've never been proud of myself where I was that day.”

Bassie added that awards are still relevant in today’s pop culture; as the people who are meant to win, do win and awards motivate artists.

“It pushes artists, the ones that haven't won, it pushes them to want to win. It's like an award at school, when you get that award of being in the top 10 you feel great and want to work harder.”

Not only has the Metro FM Music Awards poured into artists but also the province of Mpumalanga. The awards have caused major economic gain for the province through tourism, leaving them enriched even after the celebration has ended.

In 2026, the Metro FM Music Awards will be moving to a new province, bringing Mpumalanga’s three-year tenure to an end. There are murmurs of KwaZulu Natal vying for the host city, that is if Mpumalanga doesn’t pull a fast one.

SABC Group Executive: Radio, Nada Wotshela thanked the Mpumalanga Provincial Government for their unwavering support and commitment over the past two years of the awards.

“This mutually beneficial partnership has also ensured that as the SABC, we have also contributed positively to the economic development of the province, through showcasing the magnificent tourist destinations the province has to offer, filling up hotels and smaller lodges, supporting local businesses especially those in fashion and beauty industries, and showcasing local artists.”

Metro FM has again partnered with The Motsepe Foundation and the Mpumalanga Provincial Government for the 2025 awards ceremony.
