This project encapsulates the essence of his widely celebrated live shows, which have cultivated a loyal following as fans travel from city to city for a taste of Sjava's emotive storytelling through music.
Following the release of his third studio album “Isibuko” in 2023, Sjava has dedicated himself to refining his live performance craft, embarking on two sold-out album tours in 2023 and 2024.
This ambitious schedule, comprising a total of 12 stops across SA, intertwines with an impressive line-up of national live gigs, culminating in the iconic Sjava One Man Show at the 2010 FIFA World Cup Mbombela Stadium.
The decision to name the EP "Inkanyezi”, which translates to 'a star', reflects the significant role that live performances have played in his career.
The “Inkanyezi Live” EP is a heartfelt celebration of love in its myriad forms, featuring five tracks that explore various dimensions of romance, longing and devotion.
Each song brims with a sense of intimacy, enhanced by the raw energy of live performance that makes the collection feel profoundly personal.
The EP opens with “Kuye”, setting a touching tone with its exploration of destiny and ordained love. Sjava's poetic lyrics resonate deeply, with lines such as, “My heart turns silver like I lost in the finals”, illustrating the pain of loss amidst the beauty of love.
This track strikes a chord, echoing the experiences of those navigating the tumultuous waters of toxic relationships.
Following this, “Sleepover” brings forth a tender yet passionate narrative about the joys of shared moments with a beloved.
The interplay between Sjava and the woman he’s singing about reveals a commitment to one another, showcasing his ability to convey the essence of companionship, with lines that indicate a devotion that transcends past friendships.
Nostalgia envelops “Madibuseng” as Sjava reminisces about a love that is both present and elusive. He narrates the confounding motions of loving someone whose feelings fluctuate daily.
“Uyena” stands out as a deeply affectionate declaration. Here, Sjava takes listeners on a spiritual journey, praising the divine's intimate knowledge of our futures while encouraging listeners to stay focused on their dreams despite life's challenges.
The song's potential for TikTok dance challenges speaks to its infectious energy and widespread appeal.
Closing the EP is “Indoda Enjani”, a commentary on love submerged in the streets, where a man’s passion for maskandi music and politics overshadows his relationship, breeding jealousy in his partner.
In his own words, Sjava reflects on the significance of live performances: “As an artist, performing the music I create to a live audience is very important to me.
“It's a different skill to creating music in the studio, and it keeps me connected to the people.”
This connection is palpable throughout the EP, inviting both loyal supporters and newcomers to experience the magic of a Sjava live show.
Through his musical journey, Sjava has established himself as a master of blending traditional Zulu sounds with contemporary rhythms, earning a devoted fanbase both locally and globally.
His unique fusion of hip hop, R&B, and maskandi makes the EP a truly remarkable project that warrants recognition.
Sjava has proven once more that his music is not just to be heard - it's meant to be felt, deeply and sincerely.
