The beginning of a new year is often a chance to relax and unwind following an eventful holiday period.

With this in mind, here are some top movies and television shows to enjoy this January.

“Bromance”

This local reality show centres on four 30-something Johannesburg men as they navigate life, their careers, love lives and the challenges of adulthood.

The series will chronicle the group’s brotherhood, friendship, the chaos of growing up in the heart of Jozi, their wild weekend escapades and a thirst for the good life.

It will also portray their attempts to leap from carefree bachelors to future husbands and reflect their struggle between staying true to the carefree, fun-loving side of life and stepping up to the responsibilities of maturity.

∎ “Bromance” premières on Tuesday, January 7, on Mzansi Magic (DStv Channel 161) at 8pm.

“High Potential”

This Disney+ original series is based on the popular French series “Haut Potentiel Intellectuel." Starring Kaitlin Olson, the show is written by Drew Goddard who also worked on “The Good Place” and “The Martian.

“High Potential” follows a single mom with an exceptional mind, whose unconventional knack for solving crimes leads to an unusual and unstoppable partnership with a by-the-book seasoned detective (Daniel Sunjata).

∎ “High Potential” premières on January 21 on Disney+.

“Blink Twice”

This psychological thriller, which was produced and helmed by Zoë Kravitz in her directorial debut, stars her ex-boyfriend, Channing Tatum in the leading role. The rest of the film stars

Naomi Ackie, Christian Slater and Simon Rex, among others.

Tatum portrays the role of tech billionaire Slater King, who meets cocktail waitress Frida (Ackie) at his fundraising gala.

He invites her to join him and his friends for a dream vacation on his private island where they enjoy wild nights which blend into sun-soaked days.

But when strange things start to happen, Frida must uncover the truth if she hopes to make it out alive.

“The Night Agent” (S2)

This action thriller stars Gabriel Basso as FBI agent Peter Sutherland, who is thrown into a vast conspiracy about a mole at the highest levels of the United States government.

To save the nation, he plunges into a desperate hunt for the traitor, while protecting former tech CEO Rose Larkin from the people who murdered her aunt and uncle.

Season two of the show continues with Peter Sutherland, who is now a fully-fledged Night Agent after saving the president in the explosive events of season 1.

∎ The new season of “The Night Agent” premieres on January 23 on Netflix.

“Adulting” S3

This local hit series, which follows four friends as they navigate life in Johannesburg, is returning for a brand-new season.

The cast features award-winning actor Thembinkosi Mthembu, as Bonga, Nhlanhla Kunene as fan-favourite Eric, Thabo Rammusi as Mpho and Luthando BU Mthembu as Vuyani.

At the end of season two, the gents' relationships were tested even more as their personal struggles, egos and inner demons saw the men push their friendship to the limits.
