The Magnet Theatre is wrapping up the year with “Summer Season”, running from November 30 to December 13, thanks to support from the National Lotteries Commission and the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme.
The proceedings kick off off with “Mina Thina” at 10am. The play is a heartwarming production for children aged 3 to 7 but though its charm, it resonates with audiences of all ages.
Directed by Jennie Reznek, the show explores themes of community, connection and individuality through song, dance and shadow puppetry. Some of the cast includes Melusi Molefe, Yvonne Msebenzi and Lusanda Soboyise.
Then at 12.30pm, theatregoers can catch “Glimmer”, which returns by popular demand after a sold-out run earlier this year. Directed by Roshina Ratnam, this thought-provoking production delves into the pressures of growing up in today’s digital age.
Following the journey of three childhood friends, the show explores how technology and social media shape identity, relationships and the choices young people face.
With its mix of emotional depth and timely relevance, it’s a must-watch for teens, young adults and parents.
The evening slot at 7.30pm is dedicated to fresh talent with four solo shows that highlight emerging voices in South African theatre. These productions, created under the guidance of Magnet Theatre’s artistic directors, tackle diverse themes with creativity and passion. Khanya Ngcuka’s “Pumla’s Song” reflects on the dual roles of mothers who took up arms for freedom.
Meanwhile, Jenna Fish’s “Unpacking Mr Becker” explores forgotten stories and the memories left behind in life’s rush. In addition, “Nasfa Ncanywa’s Intsebenzo” examines the sacrifices of black domestic workers and their impact on family dynamics.
Then thereis Buhle T. Sefane’s “Uhambo” (The Travelling), which is a deeply personal story about mental health and the healing power of creativity and dance.
Co-founder Jennie Reznek described the “Summer Season” as a celebration of storytelling, talent and community.
“Theatre has the power to entertain, teach, and bring us together. This season is a tribute to the incredible work of our Youth Company and a reflection of the magic that happens when we connect through stories,” she shared.
With its mix of performances for kids, teens and adults, Magnet Theatre’s Summer Season is a delightful way to close off the year.
