Durban - Howard College has shut down.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal said yesterday its decision to close had been a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of staff, students and property and condemned attempts to destabilise the institution.

A large group of people had assembled at the campus’s Gate One, said spokeswoman Normah Zondo.

The academic programme has also been suspended after protests related to registration.

Zondo said that until further notice, no one would be allowed to enter the campus.

“This applies to all individuals, including staff and students who are in possession of valid university access permits, and includes returning and new students who would be coming onto this campus for residence purposes.”

The university advised residential students to remain at home.

Elsewhere in the city, student unrest rocked the Durban University of Technology (DUT) this week.

DUT was granted an urgent interdict barring student protests near any of its campuses after acts of violence, intimidation of staff and vandalism, according to reports.
