MomConnect, South Africa's primary mobile health service, has supported over five million pregnant women and new moms over the course of ten years.
With more pregnant moms seeking online medical assistance, the initiative has become an essential tool for boosting maternal and child health.
The National Department of Health (NDoH), in collaboration with the Gauteng Department of Health, celebrated the initiative's anniversary and praised its effectiveness, which has resulted in substantial gains in prenatal care, breastfeeding, and vaccination rates.
“This initiative has not only empowered women but has also made remarkable strides in reducing maternal mortality and promoting healthy practices," said Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness.
The program, which offers free healthcare information via SMS and WhatsApp, allows users to seek professional assistance on topics such as pregnancy care, newborn health, nutrition, and vaccinations.
The text-based help desk also connects users to healthcare professionals for quick responses to pregnancy-related questions.
Key successes include 96% of mothers attending at least four antenatal visits and 89% reporting their babies received all six-week vaccinations.
The programme has also increased breastfeeding rates and provided crucial support for family planning.
Elena Khukhu, a MomConnect user, praised the service for the guidance she received during her first pregnancy.
"This is my second pregnancy, and this programme is still guiding me, I hope this programme can reach more people," she said.
Another user, Thandeka Ndlovu, emphasised how cost-effective the programme is. "The programme is cost-effective because we are also able to communicate with a professional nurse on WhatsApp and the staff is always available to assist, this makes it easier for me to stay informed.“
