South African actress Precious Kofi took to YouTube to share the importance of pre-marital counselling and why divorce shouldn’t be an option.

In the video which has garnered over 52,000 views since she posted it three days ago, the 37-year-old tells viewers that when she got married at 22, she didn’t even know what marriage was about.

She didn’t have the best example of what a marriage should be because her parents got divorced when she was 19 years old.

Also, the only other example of marriage she had was that on the soapies like “Days of Our Lives”.

In hindsight, she believes that should have gone for pre-marital counselling before getting married to learn basic things like handling conflict resolutions.

And how to handle issues like cultural differences, age differences and even racial differences.

“I entered marriage ill-prepared,” admits Kofi who was married for six years but who is now divorced with two children.

She admits that she didn’t believe in marriage then, however, she believes in it now.

She has advised couples to get pre-marital counselling before they get married.

Now that she is 37 years old, she says that she is going to go to pre-marital counselling with her partner.

“Having a third party with whom you’re discussing important issues with is a good idea,” she says.

She would like to get herself and her partner on the same page before they get married.

The following piece of advice she has to offer is around allowance - allowing the other person to change.

People need to realise that the person they married at a young age, will not be the same person ten years down the line.

Not only referring to physical differences she speaks about differences in mindset as well.

“Allow people to change. Their interest will probably be different,” she says.

She advised those dating with the intention of married, to talk about serious issues like whether or not you want to have children because children change a marriage.

She explains that her marriage changed after she had children.

Even when the butterflies are gone and you might not like your partner at times, remember that you chose that person to walk your path with, she shared.
