If you’ve been scrolling through TikTok or watching red-carpet events lately, you’ve probably noticed a growing trend: face tape.

This beauty hack, which promises an instant snatched, lifted look without the commitment (or price tag) of a facelift, has been making waves.

And if you still weren’t convinced, Grammy-winning rapper Doechii made it official.

Recently, the 26-year-old star picked up her first Grammy at the 2025 ceremony, rocking a bold, pulled-back look with visible face tape.

While some were surprised that she didn’t try to hide it, Doechii had already addressed this in a November 2024 TikTok video, saying: "Okay, so the face tapes are there on purpose because it's c-nt."

With celebrities openly embracing face tape, many are wondering: Do these tapes really work? Are they safe? And what do doctors think?

What is face tape and how does it work

Face tape is exactly what it sounds like adhesive strips designed to lift and tighten the skin for a more youthful, sculpted look. These tapes are often invisible or skin-toned, making them easy to blend under make-up or hair.

The process is simple:

1. Apply the tape to areas where you want a lift (like the cheeks, jawline or forehead).

2. Secure it with elastic bands or strings hidden in your hair.

3. Enjoy an instant facelift with no needles, no downtime, and no commitment.

Many South African beauty influencers and make-up artists have started using face tape for events, photoshoots, or to enhance their everyday look.

But is it all just aesthetics, or does it have real benefits?

The pros of using face tape

Instant lift without surgery: Plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr Rukmini Rednam told “People” that face tape offers a temporary solution for those who want a lifted look without going under the knife.

Unlike Botox or facelifts, there’s no recovery time or long-term effects.

Affordable beauty hack: Let’s be honest cosmetic procedures are expensive. A professional facelift can cost anywhere from R50 000 to R200 000 in South Africa, depending on the surgeon and clinic.

Face tape, on the other hand, costs as little as  R100 to R500, making it a budget-friendly alternative for those who want that million-dollar facelift effect without breaking the bank.

Make-up and photography magic: Make-up artists often use face tape for editorial shoots, red-carpet events, and performances. It creates a dramatic, sculpted look that enhances contouring and makes features pop in photos.

Encourages beauty transparency: Rednam also pointed out that celebrities like Doechii being open about using face tape helps break the stigma around beauty enhancements.

In the past, many people hid their cosmetic procedures, but today, there’s a growing movement toward honesty and self-expression.

The cons of using face tape

Temporary results: Unlike Botox or fillers, face tape doesn’t actually change your skin. The lift disappears the moment you remove the tape, which can be disappointing if you’re looking for a long-term fix.

Skin irritation: Not all tapes are skin-friendly. If you have sensitive skin adhesives can cause redness, irritation, or even rashes. Dermatologists recommend testing a small patch before using it on your face.

Can look unnatural: While some people achieve a flawless, seamless lift, others struggle with visible tape edges, awkward pulling, or uneven lifts. If not applied correctly, it can look unnatural or even uncomfortable.

Risk of skin stretching: If used too often or applied too tightly, face tape can strain the skin over time, potentially leading to premature sagging. Some dermatologists warn against making it an everyday habit.

Is face tape a good idea?

Most dermatologists and plastic surgeons agree that face tape is harmless in moderation. However, they emphasise that it should be used as an occasional beauty tool rather than an everyday fix.

Face tape is a great temporary hack, but it doesn’t replace proper skincare and long-term treatments. If you’re concerned about sagging skin, options like microneedling, collagen-boosting treatments, and sunscreen use are far more effective in the long run.

So, while face tape can give you that snatched, red carpet-ready look, it’s not a replacement for healthy skin habits and proper skincare.

If you’re looking for an affordable, non-invasive way to sharpen your features for a night out or a photoshoot, face tape might be worth trying.

However, if you’re hoping for long-term anti-ageing effects, it’s better to invest in good skincare, sun protection, and professional treatments.

At the end of the day, beauty is all about self-expression.

Whether you’re team natural glow or team snatched and sculpted, the most important thing is feeling confident and comfortable in your skin.
