ActionSA have welcomed the resignation of minister Zizi Kodwa has resigned as an MP. The former sports minister resigned amid corruption allegations.

Athol Trollip, ActionSA parliamentary leader said that they welcome the resignation of Zizi Kodwa, after apparently attending a parliamentary trip abroad.

“His resignation follows our repeated calls for his removal due to the fact that he is currently in the dock facing serious corruption charges for allegedly accepting a R1.7 million bribe, allegations that we believe render him unfit to serve as an MP.”

Trollip added that ActionSA argued from the outset that it is unthinkable for an MP to simultaneously juggle courtroom appearances for breaking corruption laws while also serving in Parliament and shaping the country’s laws.

“It is therefore crucial to highlight the ANC’s mealy-mouthed acceptance of his resignation, which speaks volumes about their lack of commitment to fighting corruption. Let us not forget that neither the ANC’s integrity committee nor their step-aside policy have done anything to prevent this individual from being sworn in as a Member of Parliament after resigning as a minister under a cloud of incriminating corruption allegations.”

Trollip said that ActionSA believes that, in the interest of the integrity of Parliament, it is imperative to forgo the status quo where individuals accused of corruption continue to walk the corridors of Parliament in flagrant disregard of the ethical standards demanded of all representatives.
