Several former ANC MECs will now lead different portfolio committees in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature under the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU).
The GPU is led by the IFP, ANC, DA and the NFP.
At least three ANC leaders who were MECs in the previous term will now lead the portfolio committees, while two other MECs will hold other key leadership post in the legislature.
The announcement by the ANC gives the posts as:
1. Chair of Chairs – Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba.
2. Chair of the Portfolio Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development – Super Zuma.
3. Chair of the Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts, and Culture –Sizophila Mkhize.
4. Chair of the Portfolio Committee on Economic Development and Tourism – Mafika Mndebele.
5. Chair of the Portfolio Committee on Environmental Affairs – Bongi Sithole-Moloi.
6. Chair of the Portfolio Committee on the Office of the Premier – Mbali Frazer.
7. Chair of the Portfolio Committee on Finance – Mthandeni Dlungwane.
8. Chair of the Committee on Quality of Life – Fikile Masiko.
9. Whip – Hlengiwe Mavimbela.
10. Whip – Celiwe Madlopha.
In a statement, the party said, “The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal is determined to play an effective oversight role to ensure the success of the PGU.”
It said as the ANC, they remain committed to ensuring that members of the executive work collectively as elected public representatives to fulfil the aspirations of the people who voted on May 29.
“We say this because we understand that there are high expectations from ordinary members of society across all corners of the province.We will ensure that we intensify the ‘taking legislature to the people’ sitting, to enable the voters to shape the direction of the PGU.
“ As the ANC, we strongly believe that this is a responsibility we dare not delegate to future generations. This is the task that our history has entrusted us with,” it said.
