DURBAN: Zulu King Misizulu ka Zwelithini has denied having a meeting with Andile Ramaphosa, President Cyril Ramaphosa’s son, the royal house said on Thursday.
Media reports earlier this week suggested that the king and the president’s son met, fuelling rumours that it was part of a move to capture the Zulu royal household.
The king’s spokesperson, Prince Africa Zulu, said the reports about a purported meeting between the two was factually incorrect.
“The king has no need to rely on Mr Andile Ramaphosa to influence such a matter. The matter of ascension is a cultural Zulu matter, and all matters and processes defined therein are well versed and practised in the Zulu tradition. The Presidency only endorses what the family has decided in accordance with cultural practices,” said Prince Zulu.
He described media reports as nefarious agendas and falsehoods that were being spread to discredit the installation of the king.
“It is unfortunate that there are those who seek to undermine and discredit the Constitutional role of the Presidency within this process. His Majesty is aggrieved that there are those who seek to tarnish both his name and that of the president,” Zulu said.
The king urged all parties to respect the office of the president in performing its ordinary duties as required and governed by the laws and Constitution of the Republic and called on the media to verify facts before publication in order to avoid spreading fake news.
