KZN MEC for Public Works and Infrastructure Martin Meyer confirmed that an official from the department of and her son, was shot dead in her home in PMB on Sunday.

Police have confirmed that they are investigating the matter. This comes as the country started to observe 16 days of no violence against women and children Meyer said.

“Details are still sketchy; it does seem that it was someone that was known to the family that committed the murder. We as the department have been in touch with the husband one of the children also passed away. Another six year old child also witnessed the murder.”

Meyer added that it is absolutely unacceptable that we live in a society where this still happens.

“Our Freedom that was so hard fought for came in 1994. We can’t celebrate this freedom if women children are not safe and in their own homes. I will be visiting the family tomorrow and see how we can assist the family. It's sad for us as the department and sad that this happened at the start of 16 days of no violence against women and children. Its up us every South Africa do something to ensure that we never have to mourn that a woman or child being murdered again,”

KZN Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said that police in Mountain Rise are investigating two counts of murder following an incident in which a 34-year-old three-month pregnant woman and her 11-year-old son were allegedly shot and killed by an unknown suspect at a house on Arabian Drive in Glenwood on Sunday morning.

“When police arrived at the scene they found the deceased's husband who informed the police that he was alerted of gunshots at his house and when he arrived he found the body of his wife lying in a pool of blood in the kitchen. He also found that his stepson was also shot and killed in his room.”
