Increased roadblocks to address the leading cause of road accidents in eThekwini Municipality, which is drunken driving, by Durban metro police resulted in the arrest of 32 people in Durban North during the weekend.
Durban metro police spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu, said metro police have significantly ramped up its weekend roadblocks as part of an ongoing campaign to curb drunk driving.
Zungu said the leading cause of road accidents in eThekwini Municipality is drunk driving.
“This proactive approach aims to reduce the alarming number of accidents and fatalities on our roads and create a safer environment for all road users,” he said.
He said over the past weekend, a series of roadblocks were strategically conducted around Durban North.
“These efforts resulted in the arrest of 32 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol, including one female driver. Shockingly, the highest recorded blood alcohol level was a staggering 0.99, highlighting the severe risk posed by intoxicated drivers,” said Zungu.
Zungu said metro police are committed to ensuring the safety of all road users.
“Our increased roadblock operations are a critical part of our strategy to deter and apprehend those who recklessly endanger lives by driving under the influence,” he said.
Metro police advised motorists to plan their journeys, avoid drinking and driving, and utilise alternative transportation options if necessary.
He said the metro police will continue to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of these operations, making adjustments as needed to ensure maximum impact.
“We urge all motorists to exercise caution, adhere to traffic laws, and prioritise safety to make our roads safer for everyone,” concluded Zungu.
