Over 30 people were injured Friday, eight of them seriously, when a passenger train collided with a cargo train in northern Slovenia, police said.

The accident took place when the passenger train, leaving the Jesenice railway station, crashed with a cargo train arriving at the station, a spokesman for Slovenian Railways, Marko Tancar, told journalists.

The two trains appear to have been travelling on the same tracks, according to news website 24ur.

“An investigation has been launched to determine whether the accident was due to technical or human causes,” Tancar was quoted as saying by 24ur.

Police reported a total 32 people were injured in the accident. Seven of them were hospitalised in Jesenice hospital, while another had to be flown to Ljubljana with serious injuries. -
