A Norwegian customs official says confessed mass killer Anders Behring Breivik was flagged in a global operation against trading in bomb-making chemicals four months before the July 22 bombing and mass shooting that killed 77 people.

Geir Hoiseth, who heads the border control department of Norway's customs agency, says Breivik's name came up as a result of the Global Shield program, a U.S. initiative, after he attempted to buy chemicals from a Polish firm.

Hoiseth says the information was passed on to Norway's security police, PST, in March. PST has said Breivik was on a list of people who had purchased chemicals from the Polish firm, but the transaction was legal and there wasn't enough information to warrant further investigation.
