Nicosia - Security sources killed three people when they opened fire on demonstrations in eastern and southern Syria on the last Friday of Ramadaan, a rights group said.

One person was killed when protesters emerged from a mosque in the flashpoint southern province of Daraa, while the other two were killed in the eastern protest hub of Deir Ezzor, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Pro-democracy activists had urged rallies under the banner “Friday of patience and determination” in defiance of deadly crackdowns by the regime against dissent that have killed more than 2 200 people since mid-March. - Sapa-AFP
