Sydney - A Canadian sailor has been rescued off the coast of south-west Australia after his boat broke apart in rough seas.

A spokeswoman for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority says the crew on the Panamanian bulk carrier Kohju pulled Paul Lim to safety on Tuesday morning. He was not hurt.

The engine on Lim's yacht broke away as he battled 10-meter waves and strong winds. Lim activated the emergency beacon on his 9.5-meter craft on Monday, about 140 nautical miles southwest of Cape Leeuwin on Australia's southwest tip.

The maritime authority official says the rescue took six hours and that Lim's yacht was sinking. He's continuing on to the Canary Islands, off the northwest African coast, with the Kohju.

As is common in Australia, the official spoke on condition of anonymity. - Sapa-AP
