St Petersburg - One man was killed when the roof of a Russian supermarket collapsed under heavy snow in St Petersburg on Tuesday, injuring another nine people and possibly trapping more under the rubble.

Emergency services officials said more than two dozen diggers and trucks were working to sift through debris after 500 hundred square metres of roof caved in at a branch of Russia's third-largest food retailer retailer, O'Key.

Nine people have been hospitalised and officials said more people could be trapped in the rubble almost three hours after the accident at 8.35pm.

“Twenty-seven trucks and 88 people are working now to excavate the debris. It is unclear if someone is still underneath,” a local spokesperson for Russia's emergency services said.

She said the roof had most likely given way while workers were sweeping snow from it following a heavy snowfall. - Reuters
