The African National Congress (ANC) is reportedly seeking the backing of the Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) to seal the City of Tshwane mayoral seat.
The city council is set to elect a new mayor to replace the not ‘backing down’ former Democratic Alliance (DA) mayor Cilliers Brink.
Brink was removed last month in a sponsored motion of no confidence by the ANC. This was supported by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and ActionSA.
Among reasons why he was removed is because he was allegedly not providing service to all the residents.
The two parties are allegedly contemplating an agreement to merge and stabilise the city.
As reported in the Sunday Times, the ANC approached the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) in a bid to persuade them to accept the proposal to join efforts to secure the mayoral position.
It said that the talks between the parties are not only about Tshwane but also about government. The negotiations are said to have advanced to another level.
However, FF+ stated that no conclusions have been reached, as there has been no formal engagement at the national level.
According to reports, regional leaders from Tshwane and Gauteng will meet with national ANC leaders on Monday to talk about the metropolitan municipality's future.
In the mix, the DA has written to President Cyril Ramaphosa seeking action against Gauteng ANC chairperson Panyaza Lesufi for defying the orders from the national office.
The DA has accused Lesufi of ruling Gauteng in his own accord.
Lesufi has responded that Zille cannot dictate terms in the ANC because they were not a branch of the DA.
The DA is set to field Brink again as their mayoral candidate.
