A blood-stained running shoe and T-shirt were pivotal in solving a murder case in Bloemfontein, leading to a 14-year prison sentence for 26-year-old Leonard Olyn.

He pleaded guilty in the Free State High Court to the killing of 23-year-old Elvira Syster, whose life was cut short in a local graveyard.

The case began when a passer-by discovered Syster unconscious at a local graveyard on the morning of March 24, 2024.

Police were summoned to the scene, and the victim was rushed to Pelonomi Hospital, where she sadly succumbed to her injuries a week later, on March 31, 2024.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Martin Xuma stated that preliminary investigations uncovered evidence of severe beating, with the victim showing multiple bruises.

Key evidence found at the crime scene included a blood-stained running shoe and a T-shirt, both of which were instrumental in solving the case.

Olyn was arrested the very next day after being seen wearing the same T-shirt found at the scene.

Forensic analysis confirmed that the blood-stained items were linked to Olyn, sealing his fate in court. Detective Warrant Officer Paseka Tsokolibane, who led the investigation, played a critical role in ensuring justice was served.

“Detective Warrant Officer Paseka Tsokoliban successfully opposed bail, and the accused was in custody until he was sentenced,” Xuma confirmed.

Olyn’s guilty plea resulted in a swift sentencing. In addition to his 14-year prison term, the court declared him unfit to possess a firearm, further ensuring the safety of the community.
