A fishing trip ended in tragedy when a man was found dead in the Mogalakwena river near Arries village, his body missing several parts, in what authorities believe was a crocodile attack.
Limpopo police were alerted to the incident on Friday, February 7 at around 9am, said police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.
"Preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased was last seen fishing on the same spot, and there is a possibility that he was attacked by crocodiles. Provincial Search and Rescue Team was summoned to the scene and the body was retrieved from the river," said Ledwaba.
Initial investigations suggest that the man, who is identified as Phuthi Oscar Serumula, had been fishing at the same spot before the attack. His body was recovered without hands and with severe damage to his stomach. Emergency medical personnel confirmed his death at the scene.
A case of inquest has been opened as authorities investigate the circumstances of his death.
Residents have been urged to be cautious when near crocodile-infested rivers to prevent further loss of life.
