The 45-year-old man arrested in connection with a mass shooting incident in Lusikisiki that claimed 18 lives is expected to make an application for bail on Tuesday morning.
Siphosoxolo Myekethe is expected to appear in the Lusikisiki Magistrate’s Court where he faces 18 counts of murder.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said they will oppose the bail application.
Myekethe, a convicted killer, was out on parole when he allegedly killed the 18 people.
Myekethe was arrested on October 7, 2024 at his home in Mthimde Location, Mamfengwini Area in the district of Lusikisiki.
He was also convicted of escaping from lawful custody.
A total of 15 women and 3 men were killed on September 28, 2024 in two separate incidents.
It is unclear what the motive of the shooting incident is.
Eastern Cape NPA spokesperson Luxolo Tyali said in court on Tuesday there will a report from the Department of Correctional Services regarding the accused’s parole status and possible bail application.
The funeral for the victims took place this weekend.
The women victims have been identified as Nonkanyiso Dukuza, 19, Ruth King, 21, Mandisa Dlokweni, 59, Samantha Sinqina, 26, Lungiswa Gawulekana, 51, Thandeka Mhlaluvele, 46, Mary Sinqina, 63, Nombuliso Dukuza, 32, Mathembisile Mayekiso/Sinqina, 64, Nobelungu France, 59, Themi Vimba, 41, Nomazwi Ndleleni, 59, Nancy Sinqina, 59, Dimpho Sinqina, 30, Thali King Sinqina, 26.
The three male victims were: Thobile Sinqina, 37, Smomoza Sinqina, 14, and 59-year-old Sigobodo Gxobela.
