Two men have been arrested in connection with the theft of a Toyota Quantum, during joint patrol duties conducted by the Hoopdal and Cumberland police in Limpopo.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said the duo was arrested on Saturday.

“Police were alerted about a white Toyota Quantum suspected to be stolen by unknown male suspects at Lephalale policing area and commenced with a lookout. The stolen motor vehicle was positively spotted while traveling between the R510 and Sentrum T-junction and was immediately stopped,” said Mashaba.

“Unexpectedly, one male passenger vacated the minibus and started to roll in front of the police while holding his stomach pretending to be in serious pains.”

The driver of the Toyota Quantum was interrogated and he alleged that he was taking the sick men to the hospital.

The minibus was inspected and police established that it positively fitted the description of the vehicle reportedly stolen in Lephalale precinct.

“The duo was immediately placed under arrest for possession of a stolen motor vehicle. The suspects both aged 31 will appear before the Thabazimbi Magistrate’s Court soon facing a charge of possession of stolen motor vehicle,” said Mashaba.

In September, IOL reported that a 33-year-old man was arrested on multiple charges, including possession of a presumed stolen motor vehicle and contravention of the Immigration Act during an anti-smuggling operation, in Limpopo.

At the time, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the Zimbabwean national was arrested in the Polokwane policing area.

“Reportedly, members of the Limpopo SA Police Service’s provincial anti-smuggling task team received a tip off about a stolen vehicle that was destined to be smuggled out of the country,” said Ledwaba.

“The team arrested a Zimbabwean male national, who was found driving in a white Toyota Fortuner, at N1 Road behind Peter Mokaba Stadium. Preliminary police investigations revealed that the vehicle was reported stolen at Alberton policing area in Gauteng province on September 18, 2024.”
