Police in Eastern Cape have launched an urgent manhunt after a 75-year-old woman was sexually assaulted and robbed in her Mdletyeni home, in what authorities describe as a particularly heinous attack.
The incident occurred on the night of Friday, January 31, hen an unidentified assailant, reportedly concealing his identity with a balaclava and forcefully entered the elderly woman's home around 9pm.
The suspect allegedly sexually assaulted the elderly woman before robbing her of an undisclosed sum of money.
"It is alleged the victim was asleep in her home when an unidentified individual, reportedly concealing his identity with a balaclava, forcefully entered the property," said police spokesperson Captain Namhla Mdleleni.
"The suspect committed the acts of sexual violence against the elderly woman before proceeding to rob her of an undisclosed sum of money."
A case of rape has been opened, and police are leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit of the suspect.
Authorities are urging anyone with relevant details to come forward.
“In a determined effort to ensure public safety and deliver justice for the victim, the police are appealing to community members for any information that could assist in the apprehension of the suspect,” said Mdleleni
