The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) appealed to anyone who may be missing a relative to come forward after an unidentified body washed up along a beach in Simon’s Town, Cape Town.
On Saturday, December 7, the Simon’s Town duty crew were activated following a request for assistance from police reporting eyewitnesses who came across a body on the shoreline, in shallow turf, among the rocks at the Fisherman’s Beach.
NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said its rescue swimmers responded aboard the NSRI Simon’s Town rescue vehicle and Cape Medical Response dispatched paramedics to join the South African Police Services (SAPS) on the scene.
He said the SAPS’ Water Policing and Diving Services were also activated.
“On arrival on the scene, the body of an unidentified adult male was located at low tide on the edge of the rocks, on the shoreline,” Lambinon said.
"The body of the man was recovered by police divers, assisted by NSRI Simon’s Town, Simon’s Town police, and CMR paramedics. The body of the man has been taken into the care of Government Health Forensic Pathology Services. Police have opened an Inquest docket.”
He said no cases of missing persons have been reported relating to this matter.
“It appears that there are no reports of a person missing that may relate to this case and the circumstances are unknown. Police are investigating,” Lambinon said.
He further urged anyone with information to come forward.
“Anyone who can assist the police with information related to this case and the man's identity can call Simon’s Town police station on 021 786 8646,” Lambinon said.
