President Cyril Ramaphosa has issued a directive for all South African flags to be flown at half mast across the country in honour of former Finance Minister Tito Mboweni.

Mboweni is set to be buried in a Special Official Funeral Category 2 in his home province of Limpopo, at the weekend.

Mboweni, a former Member of Parliament, former Minister of Finance and former Governor of the South African Reserve Bank, died on Saturday, October 12, after a short illness. He was 65-years-old.

He started his political activism in the 1980s and abandoned his studies to go into exile. When he returned, he was appointed as the Minister of Labour after the first democratic elections in 1994, and served in that position until 1998.

He became the Advisor to the Reserve Bank Governor in 1998 and from 1999 to 2009, he was the first black Governor of the Reserve Bank, a role he carried with excellent leadership.

President Ramaphosa, in 2018, appointed Mboweni to role of Minister of Finance while he continued in, until 2021. As a Member of Parliament, Cde Mboweni served in the Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation from August 2021 until his resignation on 1 February 2022.

Tributes have poured in following news of his death.
