In a vibrant celebration of cultural heritage and global unity, Cape Town China International School (CIS) has launched a special Chinese New Year event, aligning with the worldwide recognition of the Spring Festival as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. The event, titled "Celebrating Chinese New Year Together, Building the Chinese Dream Together", is part of a broader initiative organised in collaboration with the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese to promote Chinese culture and foster cross-cultural understanding among young people worldwide.

The event, which kicked off this week, features a series of online courses designed to immerse participants in the rich traditions and values of the Chinese New Year. Dubbed "The Five Series of Spring", the program includes "The Language of Spring", "The Song of Spring", "The Splendor of Spring", "The Fruits of Spring", and "The Memories of Spring". These courses delve into various aspects of the Spring Festival, including its history, folklore, poetry, etiquette, and traditional attire, offering students a comprehensive understanding of the festival's cultural significance and its embodiment of Chinese national spirit.

Adding a touch of creativity and personal connection to the festivities, the school has introduced a special "Wishing Tree" activity. Students from all classes were invited to write down their New Year’s wishes after learning about and reflecting on the traditions and meanings of the Spring Festival. The wishes, written on colorful cards, were then hung on the tree, transforming it into a vibrant symbol of hope and unity. The activity saw enthusiastic participation, with the tree becoming fully adorned in just over two hours, showcasing the students' heartfelt aspirations for the year ahead.

"The Spring Festival is not just a time for celebration; it is a profound expression of our shared values, family bonds, and hopes for the future," said Ms. Li Wei, Principal of Cape Town China International School.

"Through this event, we aim to connect young people across the globe, fostering a sense of unity and mutual respect while showcasing the beauty of Chinese culture. The Wishing Tree is a beautiful representation of our students' dreams and the collective spirit of the Spring Festival."

Participants in the online camp are also encouraged to engage creatively with the course material by submitting their own works, which can include essays, photographs, paintings, or video stories. These submissions will serve as a platform for students to express their understanding of the Spring Festival and its themes.

The deadline for submissions is February 4, 2025, giving students ample time to reflect on and create their projects.

The event has already garnered significant interest from students and parents alike, both within the school and from the broader Chinese diaspora community in Cape Town.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for my children to connect with their roots and learn about the traditions that have shaped our family for generations," said Mr. Zhang, a parent of two students at CIS. "It’s also a chance for them to share their culture with their friends from different backgrounds. The Wishing Tree activity was particularly touching—it brought the whole school together in such a meaningful way."

The initiative is part of a larger effort by the Chinese government and cultural organizations to promote the global understanding of Chinese traditions and to strengthen the bonds among overseas Chinese communities. By highlighting the Spring Festival as a UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage, the event underscores the universal appeal of the festival and its role in fostering dialogue and mutual appreciation among diverse cultures.

As the world continues to grapple with challenges of division and misunderstanding, events like these serve as a reminder of the power of cultural exchange to bridge gaps and build a more inclusive global community. Cape Town China International School’s Chinese New Year celebration is not just a festival; it is a testament to the enduring spirit of unity and the shared dreams that connect us all.
