It's time to haul out the raincoats and umbrellas ahead of a warning for heavy rains and severe thunderstorms over parts of the country on Thursday.

The South African Weather Service (Saws) has issued a Yellow Level 1 warning for severe weather over the western and southern parts of the Free State, the western part of North West, as well as the extreme north-eastern part of Northern Cape and eastern interior of Eastern Cape.

Saws urged residents to brace for severe weather, strong winds, heavy downpours and possible strong winds.

The forecaster has further issued a Yellow Level 1 warning for damaging winds and waves between East London and Durban.

Meanwhile, an extremely high fire danger warning has been issued over the central part of Northern Cape as well as the Sundays River Valley Municipality of the Eastern Cape.

Outlook for the rest of SA

"It will be cloudy over the south-western parts of the Western Cape, with morning drizzle along the west coast, otherwise partly cloudy and cool but warm in the north-east.

“It will become cloudy along the south coast and adjacent interior with evening showers and rain. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate westerly to north- westerly along the west coast in the morning, otherwise moderate to fresh south-westerly," Saws said.

In parts of the Northern Cape, it will be fine, windy and warm to hot with isolated showers and thundershowers over the far eastern parts, where it will be partly cloudy.

In Mpumalanga, residents will wake up to morning fog along the escarpment. It will warm up later in the day with isolated showers and thundershowers by the afternoon.

In Limpopo, it will be cloudy in the east in the morning, otherwise fine and cool to warm.

And in Gauteng, it will be partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers in the south.
