Pretoria - The two-day C40 World Mayors Summit, which started yesterday in Buenos Aires, Argentina, will present Tshwane mayor Randall Williams with an opportunity to sell the metro’s climate action plan to the world.
Ahead of the summit, Williams expressed the importance of sharing ideas and learning best practices from Tshwane’s counterparts “to fight climate change and protect our natural environment”.
He said would use the summit to highlight the City’s climate action plan, launched in June this year under the theme “A net-zero carbon and climate resilient City by 2050”.
Launched in partnership with the University of Pretoria, Future Africa, C40 Cities and the Tshwane Economic Development Agency, the plan sets out the City’s commitment and plans to be a net-zero carbon and climate-resilient city by 2050.
It was envisaged that the climate action plan was a “profound commitment to future-proof Tshwane” against the damaging impacts of climate change.
Through the plan, the metro would ensure it reduced greenhouse gas emissions, the cause of global warming.
Williams said: “During the mayoral conference, I will participate in the green jobs press conference along-side other mayors to work towards driving the creation of green jobs by 2030.
“The City of Tshwane is cognisant of the impact of climate change, especially on vulnerable communities, and so we are committed to supporting the promotion of a green economy.”
