The stage is set for the inaugural Motherland International Blues & Jazz Festival 2024 set to happen in Naledi, Soweto, on October 27, promising an inspiring musical experience that transcends borders.

This highly sought-after event is a celebration of music, culture, and heritage, showcasing an eclectic mix of blues and jazz that both honours tradition and embraces contemporary influences.

This year’s festival promises a dynamic platform for emerging talent and established artists from across the region, uniting for an inspiring musical experience that transcends borders.

At the heart of this highly anticipated cultural event is Smoke J. Lawrence, a passionate artist who has navigated tremendous personal challenges to bring the blues to the forefront of South Africa's music scene.

Having moved to Gauteng with nothing but hope for greener pastures, the talented musician now leads this festival with infectious enthusiasm, aiming to introduce the soulful rhythms of blues to a broader audience.

He explains that the endeavour not only celebrates the soulful melodies of the blues and jazz but also forges profound connections among artists of diverse origins, enriching the tapestry of the global.

“When I started out with Blues, I noticed it is a very small genre, especially in South Africa; it is only big abroad. When we go to venues for gigs, it only gets booked on Sundays. And in my head, I said I have got to change this because I want to play blues every day. And that was my drive, initially. But then I managed to change it because I play every day now.”

He says on the day music lovers are in for a nice treat as the line-up is jam-packed with artists that will deliver stellar performances. Being hailed as history in the making, this festival marks a significant milestone for the genre in the township and beyond.

“This is the first time the Blues go to the township as a festival. This is history in the making. You have to be part of this history. This year, that is the main attraction for me, besides the young talent that is going to be there. These guys are excited and hungry to perform,” he said.

The festival line-up includes Smoke J Lawrence, King Don (SZ), Soweto Family Band, Nkosazana Mashinini, Sawubona Music Jam Band, Ian King, Themba Msomi, Simunye Theatrical Faces, and Tshepo JR Mokoena ft. Lindo Summer.

The festival will spotlight a diverse array of talent, ensuring that all who attend will be immersed in the rhythm of Africa’s rich musical landscape.

It is explained that it is more than just an entertainment platform as it seeks to foster profound connections among artists of diverse backgrounds, enriching the cultural tapestry of the global music community.

The festival transcends mere entertainment; it embodies a resounding message echoing across the globe and African blues community. Now is the moment for you to unite in a harmonious symphony.
